KDF soldier dies in road crash in Kirinyaga

A Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier died on Monday morning in a road accident at Riandira along Makutano-Sagana Road in Kirinyaga County.

Maina Wachira is reported to have been riding a motorcycle at around 5.30am when he was knocked down by a lorry on his way to Makutano, a kilometer from his home.

Family members said Wachira was rushed to Sagana Health Centre where he passed on shortly after arrival.

The officer, who was stationed in Mombasa, was on his December leave when he met his death.

“His station is Mombasa he was on leave,” said Mary Githuri, an aunt of the deceased.

“This road is not safe, we have been saying for a long time but the situation has not changed.”

Wachira is said to have joined KDF in 2014 and was not married by the time of the incident.

Area residents urged the government to erect bumps along the busy road on Karatina Highway to prevent accidents that have become a norm in the area.

“It’s very sad that we had to lose such a young man through this road, ” said Kariuki Maragwa, a local resident.

“We are asking the government through our governor and Member of Parliament to help us erect bumps at this place.”
