KEBS lifts suspension on Kifaru, Dola maize flour brands

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has lifted the suspension for two of the five maize flour brands which were recently banned over excess levels of aflatoxin.

KEBS, in statements released on Wednesday, stated that Dola by Kitui Four Mills and Kifaru by Alpha Grain Limited had met approved quality standards.

The State body commended the two firms for stopping production when their products were suspended as well as for conducting and monitoring to completion the recall exercise of the affected products from the market.

“KEBS inspectors thereafter conducted inspections to review and determine the effectiveness of the controls put in place by your firm that were to ensure that your future products meet the requirements of the fortified sifted maize meal specification,” read the statements.

The two firms are now expected to arrange for the destruction of the recalled non-conforming products as well as adhere to the scheme of supervision and control signed with KEBS.

The standards watchdog further vowed to continue monitoring the effectiveness of the firms’ sifted maize flour products through market surveillance, factory inspections and testing.

Dola and Kifaru maize flours wewre among five suspended by KEBS on November 9, 2019.

The others included Starehe by Pan African Grain Millers, 210 Two Ten by Kenblest Limited and Jembe by Kensal Rise Limited.
