Uhuru, Ruto at Kenneth Matiba funeral service

A special funeral service for the late Kenneth Matiba is currently underway at the All Saints Cathedral Church in Nairobi.

The veteran politician died on Sunday, April 15. The family has since issued a statement indicating that the body of the late Matiba will be cremated as per his wishes.

Earlier, the convoy left Lee Funeral Home and passed through Ngong Road, Haile Selassie Avenue and Uhuru Park via Processional Way to allow Kenyans to pay their last respects.

President Uhuru Kenyatta, First Lady Margaret, Deputy President William Ruto and Mama Ngina are at the church for the memorial service.

Government officials present include Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia and Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua.

Other leaders are former President Mwai Kibaki as well as those from the Opposition; Musalia Mudavadi, Kalonzo Musyoka and Moses Wetangula.

Another service will be held on Thursday, April 26 at Ihura Stadium in Matiba’s home town of Murang’a.

Preparations for the hero’s State funeral are being led by a special committee chaired by the Head of Public Service.

In January 1994, a local newspaper reported that Mr. Matiba, the then Ford Asili Chairman,   said he would want a low key funeral in the event that he died.

“I don’t want dancing, parties and Harambees when I die. After all, the Kikuyu traditionally never buried their dead.

“If a man was not assisted while he was alive, why should people raise funds for him after he dies?” he posed.
