Kenya on the precipice, warns Kaparo

National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) chairman Francis Ole Kaparo says that the current political climate is similar to the period before the 2007/08 post election violence.

Speaking during a media briefing, Kaparo has urged President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA head Raila Odinga to dialogue to resolve their differences so as not to rollback the gains the nation has made in building cohesion.

He pleaded with Kenyans to learn to talk to one another since the era of solving differences with bloodshed is long gone.

“A polarised Kenya is a road for endless mistrust, hostility and economic retrogression, that is the road we must not travel, we must not take, a road we must avoid.” Kaparo ended his brief.

He called upon the political bigwigs to explore alternative means of resolving issues at hand and to act with “openness, sobriety and tolerance in addressing the current political impasse.”

Kaparo promised to deal with hate mongers and warned Kenyans to be aware with fake news intended to incite, misinform and manipulate public reactions insisting that people should treat sensational news with caution and avoid rushing to conclusions.

The former speaker of the National Assembly asked IEBC to follow the law and ensure they conduct a free, fair and credible elections.

He also requested those maintaining law and order to do so as per the constitution and urged the government to investigate those responsible for vandalism during demonstrations.

Kaparo applauded the media for its efforts in influencing the agenda of political discussion and the way they report sensitive issues urging that they should vet panelists and all journalists should adhere to their code of ethics.
