Kenya Bombs Key Somalia Al Shabaab Bases Following Garissa Attack

The warplanes had targeted two camps in the Gedo region used by Al-Shabab to cross into Kenya, Obonyo added.

This is the country’s first response to an Al-Shabab assault which left 148 people dead at Garissa University last week.

President Uhuru Kenyatta had vowed to respond to the attack "in the severest way possible".

Mr David Obonyo said that the military had responded to "threats" by launching the air strike on Sunday night in the remote region.

STRING OF ATTACKS

No further details of the operation were available at this stage, he said.

Al-Shabab Islamist militants are battling the UN-backed government in Somalia, and are suspected of links to a string of attacks in Kenya.

The group, which is allied to Al-Qaeda, has been pushed out of most of the main towns it once controlled, but it remains a potent threat.

Al –Shabab  stormed the Garissa University College in Garissa killing at least 148 people, and injuring 79 others.

The militant group Al-Shabaab , which the gunmen claimed to be from, took responsibility for the attack.

The attack was the deadliest in Kenya since the 1998 United States embassy bombings .

It had more casualties than the 2002 Mombasa attacks, the 2013 Westgate Shopping mall attack, the 2014 Nairobi bus bombings, the 2014 Gikomba bombings  and the 2014 Lamu attacks.
