Kenya gearing up to expand capacity to handle kidney diseases: CAS Mwangangi

The government will in the next financial year enroll one million Kenyans from underprivileged families across the country to the National Hospital Insurance Fund.

Health CAS Mercy Mwangangi said the fund will cater for non communicable diseases including dialysis problems.

“Kenya is gearing up to expand its capacity to handle kidney diseases through an institute under construction on Ngong Road,” she said.

Speaking at KNH on Thursday, Dr. Mwangangi added that the ministry aims to ensure that renal complications are dealt with adequately.

At the same time she allayed some fears that patients with kidney complications stand a high a chance of contracting COVID-19 but maintained that they should stay safe during this period.

On their part, KNH Chief Executive Evans Kamuri and board chair George Ooko said the facility has taken renal concerns seriously.

Head of the Renal Unit Dr. John Ngigi added: “Our kidney transplant journey aims at transforming lives of people suffering kidney disease.We have leveraged on robust partnerships and government has been supportive.”
