Kenya importing less sugar Kindiki

Senate Majority Leader Kithure Kindiki has accused Coalition for Reforms of Democracy (CORD) for politicising the Kenya – Uganda sugar deal.

Kindiki alleged that CORD was misleading Kenyans by spreading falsehoods and innuendo against the government despite its efforts to revive the country’s sugar industry.

He said contrary to claims that the government is not committed to promoting locally produced sugar, the amount of sugar imported into the country has significantly reduced since Jubilee came to power.

“In the three years that Jubilee has been in power, the amount of sugar imported into the country has reduced from 300,000 metric tonnes to 190,000 metric tonnes,” said the Tharaka Nithi Senator.

On her part, Runyenjes Member of Parliament Cecily Mbarire accused CORD of complicating the sugar issue saying the opposition should give solutions instead of playing politics with the matter.

She said that sugar factories were closing down and yet the cartels behind illegal importation of sugar are well known.

The legislators cautioned sugar farmers in Western Kenya against falling prey to opposition’s tactics to derail government projects in order to gain political mileage.

Other leaders present were Embu Senator Lenny Kivuti and the Chuka Igamba Ng’ombe MP Muthomi Njuki who accused the opposition of hypocrisy and dishonesty.

In a statement released on Thursday, CORD said the sugar deal between Kenya and Uganda is fraudulent adding that Uganda has no surplus sugar to export to Kenya.

The opposition claimed that the deal is a ploy for corrupt government officials to import sugar from Brazil to Kenya through Uganda.
