Kenya is food secure, government says

The government has moved to allay fears of an impending food shortage in the country.

This is after Deputy President William Ruto said that the government had already purchased 205,000 metric tons of fertilizers to help improve productivity.

“So far we have managed to purchase 205,000 metric tons of subsidized fertilizer to be sold to farmers as a way of managing productivity and ensuring food security for Kenyans,” said Mr Ruto.

“At least 220,000 farmers have benefitted from this project of subsidized fertilizer across the country and more will continue to benefit.”

He noted that this has seen productivity go up from 14 bags to 20 bags of maize being harvested from every acre of land.

The government has also reduced the cost of Artificial Insemination services by half and discarded the water-based vaccinations for oil-based ones which are stronger.

This comes barely a month after Kenyans from arid and semi-arid areas registered concerns over prolonged drought periods and impending food shortage.
