Kenya joins world in marking World Bamboo Day

Kenya, for the first time, joined the rest of the world in marking the World Bamboo Day during celebrations held on Sunday, September 18 at Nyabera Farm in Awendo Sub-County, Migori County.

The celebrations were aimed at creating awareness to the value of Bamboo globally.

The Kenya Bamboo Pioneer Network (KBPN) founder, Victor Siribwa Manga, appealed to the government to create a local and push for an international market for Bamboo saying that the lucrative venture will not only serve as a source of income but help conserve the environment.

Kenya Forest Research Institute (KEFRI) head Scientist, Dr Paul Ongugo, echoed Manga’s sentiments and encouraged the people of Nyanza region to take advantage of their conducive climate for Bamboo farming noting that it has better financial returns within a short period of time.

Nyabera farm owner, Francisca Kwasa, confirmed that unlike other trees, Bamboo only takes three years to mature and exhibits numerous uses.
