Kenya Medical Training College Nakuru closed indefinitely

The Kenya Medical Training College Nakuru Campus has been closed indefinitely after students went on a rampage destroying property worth millions of shillings.

The students, who were protesting alleged oppression by the campus administration, broke into the dining hall cashier’s office where they made away with an unknown amount of money.

They later vandalised school property including breaking windows, computers, fridges and car windscreens and stealing milk from the dining hall stores.

When the riots got out of hand anti-riot police officers from Nakuru were called in to quell the violence and arrest the rioting students.

Students, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of victimisation, accused the administration of refusing to dialogue with them on various issues including the disconnection of Wi-Fi, frequent power outages, and failure by the administration to refurbish the school’s entertainment hall.

“We will only agree with the management if our demands are met, the destruction could have been avoided if dialogue was given a chance,” said another student.

Confirming the incident, Nakuru County Police commandant Hassan Barua said police have arrested several students in connection with the incident and they are awaiting arraignment in court.

Campus Principal William Bii who was away during the riot held a morning closed-door meeting with senior institution management to help resolve the conflict.

“The students resisted few changes that had been introduced by the management, it was unfortunate that they had to engage in such acts before we concluded talks,” said the principal.

He denied claims of oppression made by a section of students saying the riots were sparked by a few rogue students.
