Kenya most generous country in Africa as China ranks low – study

Kenya has been ranked as the most generous country in Africa.

The World Giving Index ranks Kenya as top in Africa and 11th globally.

”In Kenya, more than half of people donated money to charity,” the report said.

Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) studies charitable behavior and trends around the world.

The latest research surveyed 1.3 million people in 128 countries in total., according to the Telegraph.

Kenya is the only African country in the top 20 most generous list with Nigeria and Zambia at position 22 and 52 respectively.

It is ranked as the second most improved country in terms of generosity.

“We are once again reminded of the kindness and generosity of people across the world as they dig deep despite uncertain times and significant geo-political unrest to give their time and money to help others,” CAF chief executive John Low was quoted in the Telegraph.

China on the other hand ranked lowest in all the three parameters used in the study.

A report in the Daily Nation indicated a 16 per cent scorecard for the Asian country.

Questions posed in the study revolved around helping a stranger, giving money or volunteering for a good cause.

The top three most generous countries in the world were reported as the United States (58%), New Zealand (57%) and Ireland (56%).

Liberia emerged as the best African country in regards to helping strangers while Kenya ranked 4th in this category.

The United States Embassy in Nairobi has since congratulated Kenya for the feat.

”Hongera Kenya for being the most generous country in Africa! Kenya is moving forward as a benefactor rather than a beneficiary,” the embassy said on Twitter.

The Generosity report covers ten years from 2009.
