Kenya on high security alert after terrorists attack Brussels

Kenya is on high alert following the terrorist attack that hit Brussels Tuesday, leaving about 34 dead and 250 wounded.

Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa said they have beefed up security at the Coast, especially during this Easter festivities.

He assured Coast residents that security has been heightened at various entertainment joints, airports and at ferry points to avoid terror attacks.

Marwa also said that terrorists have devised new tactics, and are now using small hotels to plan attacks.

Mombasa County Commissioner Evans Achoki on his part said proper security measures have been put in place to ensure the residents are safe.

Late December last year, Deputy President William Ruto called on Kenyans to join forces with security officers in securing the country.

The Deputy President said Kenyans should learn from the Mandera bus attack where Muslims shielded Christians from terrorists saying that everyone has a role to play in securing the country.

“As we saw the other day Muslims protecting Christians from terrorists, it means we all have a role to play in ensuring our neighbors are safe and the country is secure,” he said.

He said security officers are on high alert and determined to ensure the country is safe.

In the same month, Interior Ministry Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery urged Kenyans to aid security agencies in their counter terrorism efforts by reporting suspicious activities in their locations to avoid being caught flat footed.

In a public watch notice by the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government, citizens were challenged to play a role in counter-terrorism and prevention of criminal activities by being vigilant and reporting any suspicious activity, items and persons.
