Kenya Police lead in perpetration of torture – Report

A report by the Independent Medico-Legal Unit (IMLU) has placed the Kenya Police top in perpetration of torture at 59.3 per cent.

The 2016 report, released on Monday, also named administration police, chiefs and county askaris among security agencies who perpetrate torture, at 18.5 per cent, 13.5 per cent and 8.1 per cent respectively.

“Overall regular police are known to commit acts of torture and ill treatment mostly in the regions of Coast and Nairobi, the administration police in Central region, local chiefs in Nyanza and Western regions and Kenya Defence Forces in North Eastern region,” stated the report in part.

Police have in the past been linked to cases of torture and extrajudicial killing with the most recent allegations being in connection to the death of lawyer Willy Kimani, his client Josephat Mwenda and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri.

So far four administration police officers have been charged with the murder of the three.
