Kenya Power Cuts Off Power Supply To GK Prisons

The Principal Secretary for the State Department of Coordination in the Ministry of Interior and Coordination of National Government Josephta Oyiela Mukobe says Kenya Power Company cut off power supply to the prisons over an unpaid bill amounting to close to Ksh1 Billion.

Mukobe says that the Kenya Prisons Service owes debtors close to Ksh2.2 Billion and suppliers of goods and services have decried the delay in the payment of their cash.

The PS was speaking in Embu after paying a courtesy call to the Embu County Commissioner on her way to a familiarization tour of the status of prisons in the area.

Mukobe says the Prisons Department must seek ways of better utilizing resources within its reach.

She says the department has been struggling to meets its obligations as it now has a total of 55,000 personnel in its payroll.

Embu County Commissioner Moses Gathecha told the visiting PS that merchants in the county have expressed concern about the delay in the payment of their outstanding bills.  The county commissioner says the Embu GK Prison owes merchants  over Ksh31 million for goods and services supplied.
