Kenya Power employee arrested for allegedly demanding Ksh.300K bribe

An employee from Kenya Power has been arrested after he allegedly demanded Ksh.300,000 as a bribe to reconnect electricity for a customer.

Officers from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) are said to have been trailing Francis Macharia since March 16.

Macharia allegedly negotiated with former Mutithi Ward MCA Jinaro Jamumothe to reduce the bribe to Ksh 50,000.

Jamumothe had reportedly requested to have his line reconnected into a three-phase line instead of single phase line at Kagio.

He had reported that his electricity line was disconnected four weeks ago.

EACC Central region boss Charles Rasugu said the suspect was arrested at the premises of the former MCA.

He is to be arraigned in court after investigations are completed.

Kenya Power manager for Kirinyaga County Kipruto Ruto confirmed that the suspect is a meter reader at the Kerugoya offices.
