Kenya Power Supplies Free Power for Busia County

Kenya Power launched a special program to provide safe and affordable power in the informal settlements of the county at a cost of Ksh 37 million.

Speaking at Siruka primary school in Butula constituency, Kenya Power Managing Director Ben Chuma said about 28 houses have already been connected.

He added that the project is part of the World Bank funded electrification program targeting informal settlement and low-income earners.

Dr. Chumo said the project is aimed at enhancing the lives of the residents.

The World Bank, through the Global Partnership of Output Based Aid contributed Ksh 19, 350 while Kenya Power contributed Ksh 11,970 per connection making up the standard capital contribution of Ksh 32, 480 per connection.

 

Boosting county's economy

Residents are required to pay a paltry Ksh 1,160 per connection.

Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong lauded Kenya Power for its improved quality of services and reduced cases of black outs.

He expressed his happiness saying that the dawn of power in the rural areas will boost the county’s economy.

“Many factories in the county will benefit from this power supply,” said Ojaamong. 

He, however, called upon the company to improve on its customer care services.

Area Member of Parliament Micheal Onyura called on the power comapany to consider the residents in contracts and tenders to the project.

“Provide proper education of power to the people to avoid unnecessary accidents,” said onyura.
