Kenya Railways issues 7-day eviction notice to tenants of Kisumus Upper Estate

Kenya Railways has issued a seven-day notice to tenants of Upper Estate in Kisumu to vacate their houses and pave way for redevelopment.

According to the State Corporation, the houses have been in deplorable conditions due to old age and lack of adequate sanitary facilities hence making them inhabitable.

Kenya Railways Managing Director Philip Mainga, in a notice released Thursday, stated that the estate will be redeveloped to a public market and ancillary services.

“The intended use will revitalize the area, create jobs for the local citizens and spur economic growth in line with government’s Big 4 agenda,” read the notice.

Mr. Mainga further urged the tenants to adhere to the 7-day notice adding that failure to comply “will compel Kenya Railways to forcefully evict you and take over possession of the said house.”

He added: “Kenya Railways shall not bear liability for any loss and damage whatsoever.”
