Kenya receives Ksh 24 billion to address HIV, TB

Kenya has received a Ksh 24 billion support from the Global Fund that will be used to tackle HIV and Tuberculosis cases in the country.

Months after donors pushed off funding for the two key programmes, the latest move will see HIV and TB interventions go on as planned around the country.

Another Ksh 11 billion has been given for Malaria treatment after Kenya passed all the requirements that were needed for funding.

According to Health Principal Secretary Dr. Khadija Kasachoon, the funds have already been availed to the country and were in the process of being rolled out to all the counties.

She said that under the Kenya Coordination Mechanism (KSM) on Global Fund, a new financing model had been approved after consultations with stakeholders in the health sector.

The PS said under the new model, key stakeholders had to be involved where a concept note was developed and assessed before it passed the eligibility stage.

Kasachoon was speaking to the press after opening a two day workshop for Kenya coordination mechanism on global fund members at Sopa Lodge in Naivasha.

County treasuries to blame for delayed salaries

She said that KCM was working on national proposals to allow a comprehensive participation in order to execute the mandate of the funds with no delay.

“We will ensure the funds are availed on time to make sure that the TB and HIV war is won,” she said.

She, however, hit out at the counties over salaries for doctors saying the national government had done all it was required and the money had already been sent to them.

The PS said all the funds had been sent in time and asked governors to stop blame the National treasury and instead put proper mechanisms to ensure that the monies get to doctors in time.

“They should blame the county treasuries instead where no one knows why they have delayed paying their doctors as required”.

According to her, other funds such as those provided by the World Banka and Danida had also been sent to them.

“Even the money for free maternity and those of clinics and dispensaries have also been given out to all the counties”.
