Kenya records 313 new COVID-19 cases, 13 deaths as 3.4 million people vaccinated so far

Kenya has recorded 313 new COVID-19 cases from a sample size of 7,034 tested in the last 24 hours, marking a positivity rate of 4.5%.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Ministry of Health said the total confirmed positive cases are now 246,956 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 2,507,763.

The 313 cases are distributed across the country as follows: Nairobi 54, Nakuru 42, Meru 23, Kericho 18, Kiambu 18, Nyeri 13, Murang’a 12, Kakamega 10, Bomet 8, Embu 8, Kisii 8, Narok 8, Mombasa 6, Nyandarua 6, Makueni 6, Uasin Gishu 6, Garissa 6, Kitui 5, Mandera 5, Kirinyaga 4, Baringo 4, Marsabit 4, Samburu 4, Bungoma 4, Trans Nzoia 4, Machakos 3, Siaya 3, Tharaka Nithi 3, Kwale 2, Laikipia 2, Migori 2, Lamu 2, Isiolo 2, Kajiado 1, West Pokot 1, Kisumu 1, Busia 1, Elgeyo Marakwet 1, Taita Taveta 1, Tana River 1 and Kilifi 1.

At the same time, 13 patients are reported to have succumbed to the disease, one of them having occurred in the last 24 hours while 12 are late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits in the month of September 2021. This now pushes the cumulative fatalities to 5,008.

Meanwhile, 498 patients have recovered from the disease with 381 from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program while 117 from various health facilities countrywide. Total recoveries now stand at 238,448 of whom 192,829 are from the Home-Based Care and Isolation program, while 45,619 are from various health facilities countrywide.

According to the Ministry, a total of 1,378 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 2,973 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program.

Some 97 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 64 of whom are on ventilatory support and 26 on supplemental oxygen while 7 patients are under observation.

“Another 448 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 419 of them in general wards and 29 in High Dependency Units (HDU),” said the Ministry.

On the ongoing vaccination exercise, as of 20th September 2021, a total of 3,409,017 vaccines had been administered across the country. Of these, total first doses were 2,543,876 while second doses were 865,141.

“The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose was at 34.0%. Proportion of adults fully vaccinated was 3.2%,” said the Ministry.

“The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups was as follows: Others 275,930, Aged 58 years and above 248,982, Health Workers 139,631, Teachers 127,536 while Security Officers are at 73,062.

The Government is working towards vaccinating targeted population of 27,246,033.

The following county figures represent those vaccinated in respective counties and percentage of the population in that area as follows; Baringo 15,399 (4.5%), Bomet 16,478 (3.5%), Bungoma 36,993 (4.4%), Busia 17,780 (3.8%), Elgeyo Marakwet 12,912 (5.3%), Embu 40,814 (10.3%) Garissa 6,774 (1.7%), Homa Bay 24,436 (4.0%), Isiolo 4,637 (3.5%), Kajiado 61,454 (9.3%), Kakamega 48,023 (4.9%), Kericho 31,334 (6.2%), Kiambu 235,733 (14.5%), Kilifi 22,628 (2.9%), Kirinyaga 46,324 (11.2%), Kisii 23,146 (3.3%), Kisumu 70,070 (10.7%), Kitui 36,003 (5.8%) and Kwale 13,126 (2.9%).

The other areas include; Laikipia 43,100 (14.1%), Lamu 4,119 (4.9%), Machakos 70,435 (7.8%), Makueni 49,015 (8.4%), Mandera 5,924 (1.7%), Marsabit 2,602 (1.2%), Meru 49,150 (5.2%), Migori 24,827 (4.5%), Mombasa 67,960 (8.5%), Murang’a 62,806 (9.3%), Nairobi 828,101 (27.1%), Nakuru 126,521 (9.9%), Nandi 30,862 (6.3), Narok 13,232 (2.4%), Nyamira 24,214 (7.1%), Nyandarua 44,954 (11.9%), Nyeri 98,403 (19.3%), Samburu 11,248 (7.7%), Siaya 24,151 (4.5%), Taita Taveta 22,841 (10.7%), Tana River 2,935 (1.9%), Tharaka Nithi 16,608 (6.7%), Trans Nzoia 36,131 (7.0%),
Turkana 7,873 (1.7%), Uasin Gishu 78,670 (11.3%), Vihiga 21,093 (6.4%), Wajir 4,643 (1.4%) and West Pokot 7,394 (2.6%).
