Kenya records 511 new COVID-19 cases, positivity rate now at 7.9pc

Kenya reported 511 new COVID-19 infections on Saturday, from a sample size of 6,434 tested in the last one day. 

In a statement to the press, the Health Ministry said the new infections, with a positivity rate of 7.9 percent, push the tally of confirmed positive cases to 243,456. 

Kenya has conducted some  2,450,791 tests since the pandemic was first reported in the country. 

“From the cases 503 are Kenyans while 8 are foreigners. 256 males while 255 are females.,” the Health Ministry said “The youngest is a 10-month-old child while the oldest is 96 years.” 

Nairobi leads with the most new cases with 93, Kiambu with 56, Nakuru with 39 and Nyeri with 30. 

Across the rest of the country, the new infections are distributed as follows: Uasin Gishu 22, Isiolo 22, Nandi 21, Kericho 19, Garissa 17, Machakos 15, Murang’a 15, Meru 14, Wajir 14, Embu 11, Busia 10, Kisii 9, Kajiado 9, Tharaka Nithi 9, Bomet 8, Laikipia 7, Kitui 7, Baringo 7, Mombasa 7, Nyandarua 7, Mandera 6, Kakamega 5, Elgeyo Marakwet 4, Makueni 4, Trans Nzoia 3, Kilifi 3, Kwale 3, Lamu 2, Kisumu 2, Marsabit 2, Siaya 2, Homa Bay 2, Taita Taveta 1, West Pokot 1, Turkana 1, Bungoma 1 and Narok 1.

A total of 1,617 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 4,447 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program. 

According to data from the Health Ministry, 148 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 99 of whom are on ventilatory support and 35 on supplemental oxygen. 14 patients are under observation. 

“Another 622 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 562 of them in general wards and 60 in High Dependency Units (HDU),” the Health Ministry said on Saturday. 

Meanwhile, Kenya’s total of recoveries have hit 231,958 following a report of 1,18 new recoveries on Saturday. 

“810 are from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program while 208 from various health facilities countrywide,” the Ministry added. 

At the same time, 6 new deaths which push the total of fatalities from the disease to 4,902 were reported on Saturday. 

“All of them were  late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits in the months of August and September 2021,” the Ministry said. 

Vaccination 

Kenya has administered some 2,255,214 first doses of COVID-19 vaccines, and 826,396 second doses pushing tally of doses administered across the country to 3,081,610. 

“The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 36.6% with the majority being males at 458,544 (56%) while females are at 367,382 (44%).” the Health Ministry revealed in a statement. 

The proportion of adults who are fully vaccinated is 3 percent against the Health Ministry’s goal of vaccinating million adults by December.
