Kenya records 63 new COVID-19 cases, majority asymptomatic

63 more people have tested positive for coronavirus with a majority of them being asymptomatic, the Health Ministry has said.

According to Health CS Mutahi Kagwe, the latest cases are from a sample size of 2,134 tested in the last 24 hours bringing the country’s caseload to 98,334.

“93% of the new confirmed cases are asymptomatic,” he said in a statement adding that cumulative tests are now 1,094,278.

From the new cases, 57 are Kenyans while 6 are foreigners. 37 are males and 26 are females. The youngest is an eight-year-old child while the oldest is 73.

Distribution of the cases by counties is as follows: Nairobi 43, Kakamega 3, Makueni 3, Kilifi 3, Busia 2, Kiambu 2, Murang’a 2, Laikipia 2, Nyeri 1, Nakuru 1 and Machakos 1.

In terms of sub county distribution, Nairobi cases are from Lang’ata and Westlands (7 cases each); Dagoretti North, Embakasi West, Kibra and Makadara (3 cases each); Dagoretti South, Embakasi Central, Kamukunji, Kasarani, Mathare and Ruaraka (2 cases each); Embakasi East, Embakasi North, Embakasi South, Roysambu and Starehe (1 case each).

In Kakamega, the three cases are from Lurambi (2) and Likuyani (1) while in Makueni all the three cases are from Makueni sub county.

In Kilifi, the three cases are from Kaloleni, Kilifi North and Malindi (1 case each).

The two cases in Busia are from Natayos and Teso North (1 case each); the two cases in Kiambu are from Kikuyu and Ruiru (1 case each); the two cases in Murang’a are from Maragua and Mathioya (1 case each) while the two cases in Laikipia are all from Laikipia East.

The case in Nyeri is from Nyeri Central while the case in Nakuru is from Nakuru East and the case in Machakos is from Athi River.

226 patients have since recovered from the disease: 221 being from the Home-Based Care Program while five have been discharged from various hospitals.

The total number of recoveries now stand at 81,101.

There are 687 patients admitted to various health facilities countrywide and 2,190 on Home Based Isolation and Care.

31 patients are in Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 20 of whom are on ventilatory support and 10 on supplemental oxygen. One is under observation.

Another 11 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen all of whom are in general wards. No patient is at the High Dependency Unit.

Three patients however succumbed to the virus pushing the cumulative fatalities to 1,713.
