Kenya to receive 880,000 doses of Moderna vaccine from U.S gov’t

Kenya will receive some 880,000 doses of the Moderna Vaccine from the United States government on Monday, the Ministry of Health has said.

The consignment will arrive at the JKIA at around 6.15a.m and will be received by Health CS Mutahi Kagwe and the US ambassador to Kenya Eric W. Kneedler. 

Kenya, which hopes to have vaccinated at least 10 million adults by December this year has administered 2,374,197 vaccines so far.

Of these, total first doses are 1,595,335 while second doses are 778,862, according to the Ministry of Heath data.

On Tuesday, Kenya received some 407,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine from the U.K to bolster the mass inoculation drive. 

Acting Director-General of Health Dr. Patrick Amoth said at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport while receiving the donation that the country expects to receive 1.7 million doses of Moderna soon, 393,000 doses of Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine in the coming weeks, and 1.8 million doses of Pfizer vaccine in September this year.

The UK government had donated another 410,000 doses to Kenya on 31 July this year following President Kenyatta’s recent tour of the United Kingdom.

The latest shipment brings the total number of vaccines received in the country to 2,730,100.

The proportion of adults who have received all of their vaccines is now 2.8 percent
