Kenyan fishermen detained in Tanzania to stay longer in custody

36 Kenyan fishermen detained in Tanzania for alleged trespass will now stay longer in custody after a Musoma court rescheduled their ruling to December 12.

The fishermen were expected to appear in court on Tuesday to know their fate after they pleaded not guilty to charges levelled against them when they first appeared in court.

The Kenyan citizens who are accused of using illegal fishing gear, were detained after they failed to raise Ksh.1.2 million bail demanded by the Tanzania authorities.

Kibro Beach Management Unit chairman Mr. Samwel Magese said he is optimistic that the men who have been in police custody for the last three weeks will be set free.

Mr. Magese claimed the Kenyan citizens have been subjected to torture by Tanzania authorities since they were arrested.

The officer appealed to locals leaders and President Kenyatta to intervene and secure their freedom.
