Kenyan General replaced by Rwandan after Juba dismissal

The United Nations Secretary General, António Guterres, has appointed Rwandan national Lt. Gen. Frank Kamanzi to succeed Kenyan Lt. Gen. Johnson Kimani Ondieki as head of UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) force.

The announcement by Guterres means Kamanzi, who is the Rwanda Force Commander, will replace Lt-Gen Johnson Ondieki, who was controversially sacked as UNMISS commander in November last year.

Lt. Gen. Kamanzi has more than 28 years of national and international military, command and staff experience and has served as Force Commander of African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur and Army Chief of Staff in the Rwanda Defence Force.

Former UN Secretary General, Ban Ki-Moon, sacked Ondieki following a probe into how UNMISS responded to deadly attacks on its headquarters and on civilian compounds in Juba in July last year.
