Kenyan police officers abducted by Al Shabaab rescued in Somalia

Two police officers abducted during the Yumbis, Garissa ambush late May have been rescued during a security operation in Somalia.

According to the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett, the two officers were abducted by suspected Al Shabaab militia who had invaded the remote village of Yumbis in Fafi, constituency, Garissa County.

The two officers – Fred Chirchir and Joseph Wambugu – were abducted in a raid that left at least one of their colleagues dead and two others injured.

According to reports, the over 50 police officers were responding to a distress call by a police patrol team when they were ambushed.

After the ambush, Mr. Boinnet said four officers were injured and airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment and that everyone had been accounted for.

Reports further indicated that four police vehicles had been damaged by a landmine believed to have been planted by the militants.

Sources revealed that the militants had on several occasions attacked the border villages and even offering Islamic lessons to the residents.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Major Gen. (Rtd.) Joseph Nkaissery dismissed reports that officers had been killed in the attack.

In mid-May, the militants are said to have attacked and occupied three villages near the border with Somalia, claims that the government vehemently denied.

Kenya is on high alert following increased militia activities in the country since the country sent its troops to the neighbouring Somalia to pursue Islamist fighters; Al Shabaab.
