Kenyans are poor learners, study shows

Research has revealed that 1 out of every 10 pupils who graduate from primary schools in the country lack ability to comprehend a class 2 story and only 3 out of 10 standard 3 pupils can read a class 2 Swahili story.

The research carried out by Uwezo Kenya also shows a rise in intake of children below 3 to 5 years into primary schools against an education ministry directive.

Speaking at Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD), Uwezo Kenya Manager Emmanuel Manyasa says the survey was done in 2013 and shows a trend of poor learning across the country.

The survey further shows that Nyeri County leads in literacy levels at 58 percent with Mandera county trailing in literacy levels at 10 percent.

The survey also revealed that 33 counties out of 47 are below average.

Presidential advisor on education Dr Kilemi Mwiria has now called on parents to pay more attention to their children’s education with the research showing a dip in boys’ performance in education as girls performance soars.
