Kenyans respond to President Uhurus Mashujaa day address
President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday led Kenyans in marking the 52nd Mashujaa Day celebrations (previously Kenyatta Day) at Nyayo stadium.
During the colorful celebrations, the Head of State called on citizens to emulate the Mashujaas liberating the country from the obstacles that have derailed national development.
“Kenya must face these challenges gallantly the way our forefathers faced the colonial masters to liberate our motherland. We must with one resolve say No to vices that would derail us from the path of progress and prosperity,” said the head of State.
Citing graft, radicalization, illicit brew, poaching and divisive politics as some of the challenges facing the nation, President Uhuru called on all Kenyans to be the heroes that Kenyans need.
But how did Kenyans on social media respond to his speech?
Nothing to smile about on uhuru speech. Kenya needs a serious transforming speech leading to action. #MashujaaDay

Commenting on the International Criminal Court (ICC) issue, Uhuru told Kenyans that they should continue with the prayers despite the sentiments expressed by the ICC judges. This statement elicited numerous reactions from Kenyans on Twitter.
#MashujaaDay Uhuru blasting ICC totally in line with the day…prayers warning the height of neo-colonialism…

While many took the time to point out the gaps in the government’s management of the problems facing the country, others sought to challenge fello9w citizens to be the change that they wish to see.
Let us also celebrate ourselves because change and a difference starts with thyself. Be that change you want to see. #MashujaaDay

Sometimes I think we are the ones who are shooting ourselves in the foot in challenging the status quo. Not our leaders #MashujaaDay

Despite the debates on the political issues surrounding Mashujaa Day, many KOT took the opportunity to laud their heroes and heroines. These conversations pushed the hash tag #MashujaaDay to the top of the trends pane. Here are some of the top tweets on the trend:
