Kenyas COVID-19 infections rise to 77,372 as 968 new cases recorded; 14 more dead

The Ministry of Health on Sunday announced that 968 people tested positive for COVID-19 from a sample size of 6,610 tested in the last 24 hours, bringing to 77,372 the total number of confirmed positive cases in the country.

From the cases, 888 are Kenyans and 80 are foreigners; 584 are males and 384 females, while the youngest is a two-month old infant and the oldest is 91.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, in a statement to newsrooms, said 155 patients recovered from the disease – 110 from the Home-Based Care Program while 45 were discharged from various hospitals – taking the total recoveries to 51,507.

CS Kagwe however also noted that 14 patients succumbed to the disease, bringing the cumulative fatalities to 1,380.

“Currently there are 1,131 patients admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 7,023 are on Home Based Isolation and Care. 63 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 36 of whom are on ventilatory support, and 26 on supplemental oxygen,” he said.

“Another 76 patients are separately on supplementary oxygen out of whom 74 are in the general wards and 2 are in the High Dependency Unit (HDU).”

Distribution of the cases by counties is as follows: Nairobi 421, Mombasa 91, Kilifi 88, Busia 73, Kiambu 54, Kajiado 30, Nakuru 22, Uasin Gishu 21, Machakos 17, Murang’a 16, Nyeri 16, Bungoma 14, Kirinyaga 13, Makueni 11, Kisumu 11, Turkana 11, Tharaka Nithi 11, Meru 11, Marsabit 8, Laikipia 4, Narok 4, Kisii 3, Homabay 3, Elgeyo Marakwet 3, Mandera 3, Nandi 2, Kwale 2 Kericho 1, Garissa 11 Wajir 1, Nyandarua 1, and Trans Nzoia

The 421 cases in Nairobi are from Westlands (55), Lang’ata (45), Dagoretti North (44), Embakasi Central and Starehe (31) cases each, Mathare (25), Ruaraka (23), Dagoretti South and Roysambu (22) cases each, Makadara (21), Kamukunji (20), Embakasi West (18), Kasarani (17), Embakasi East (15), Kibra (14), Embakasi North (13) and Embakasi South (5).

In Mombasa, the 91 cases are from Mvita (39), Jomvu (28), Kisauni (11), Changamwe (7), Likoni and Nyali (3) cases each. In Kilifi, the 88 cases are from Malindi (78), Kaloleni (9) and Magarini (1). In Busia, the 73 cases are from Matayos (64), Teso North (8), Teso South (1).

In Kiambu, the 54 cases are from Ruiru (15), Juja (10), Kiambaa (7), Kiambu Town and Thika (6) cases each, Kabete (5), Kikuyu (3) and Gatundu South (2). In Kajiado, the 30 cases are from Kajiado East and Kajiado North (11) cases each, Kajiado Central (7) and Loitokitok (1).

In Nakuru, the 22 cases are from Naivasha (11), Gilgil and Nakuru East (3) cases each, Molo and Rongai (2) cases each, Njoro (1). In Uasin Gishu, the 21 cases are from Ainabkoi and Kesses (5) cases each, Kapseret, Moiben and Soy (3) cases each, Turbo (2).

In Machakos, the 17 cases are from Athi River (14), Machakos Town (2) and Kalama (1). In Murang’a, the 16 cases are from Gatanga (9), Kiharu (4), Kandara, Kangema and Maragua (1) case each. In Nyeri, the 16 cases are from Nyeri Central (10), Mathira East (5) and Mathira West (1).

In Bungoma, all the 14 cases are from Kanduyi. In Kirinyaga, the 13 cases are from Kirinyaga Central (11), Kirinyaga North and Kirinyaga West (1) case each. In Makueni, the 11 cases are from Makueni (8) and Kibwezi East (3).

In Kisumu, the 11 cases are from Kisumu Central (9) and Kisumu East (2). In Turkana, all the 11 cases are from Turkana West.

In Tharaka Nithi, the 11 cases are from Tharaka South (8) and Chuka (3) while, in Meru, the 11 cases are from Imenti North (8), Imenti South (2) and Tigania East (1).

In Marsabit, all the 8 cases are from Saku. In Laikipia, all the 4 cases are from Laikipia East, while the 4 cases in Narok are from Narok West.

In Kisii, the 3 cases are from Kitutu Chache South (2) and Bomachoge Chache (1). The 3 cases in Homabay, are from Homabay Town, the 3 cases in Elgeyo Marakwet, are from Keiyo North, and the 3 cases in Mandera, are from Mandera East (2) and Mandera South (1).

In Nandi, all the 2 cases are from Emgwen, while all the 2 cases in Kwale are from Msambweni. The case in Kericho, is from Ainamoi, the case in Garissa, is from Ijara, the case in Wajir, is from Wajir North, the case in Nyandarua, is from 01 Kalou, and the case in Trans Nzoia is from Cherangany
