Kenya’s COVID-19 positivity rate at 13.5% after 550 cases recorded, 7 people dead

Kenya has recorded 550 new COVID-19 cases from a sample size of 4,087 tested in the last 24 hours marking a rate of positivity 13.5%.

In a statement issued on Monday, the Ministry of Health said the total confirmed positive cases are now 197,959 while the cumulative tests so far conducted are 2,097,101.

The 550 new cases are distributed across the country as follows: Nairobi 394, Kiambu 38, Nakuru 33, Kilifi 24, Uasin Gishu 10, Murang’a 8, Kajiado 8, Machakos 7, Busia 4, Kakamega 4, Kitui 3, Taita Taveta 2, Kirinyaga 2, Nandi 2, Narok 2, Nyeri 1, Siaya 1, Tharaka Nithi 1, Trans Nzoia 1, Elgeyo Marakwet 1, Makueni 1, Meru 1, Mombasa 1 and Homa Bay 1.

Meanwhile, 7 patients are reported to have succumbed to the disease, all of them being late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits
in the month of July 2021. This now pushes the cumulative fatalities to 3,872.

At the same time, 786 patients are reported to have recovered from the disease with 738 from the Home-Based Isolation and Care program while 48 are from various health facilities countrywide. This now pushes the total recoveries to 186,594 of whom 148,899 are from the Home Based Care and Isolation program, while 37,695 are from various health facilities countrywide.

According to the Ministry, a total of 1,324 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 3,688 are under the Home-Based Isolation and Care program.

Some 172 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 37 of whom are on ventilatory support and 84 on supplemental oxygen. 51 patients are under observation.

“Another 398 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 352 of them in general wards and 46 in High Dependency Units (HDU),” said the Ministry.

On the ongoing vaccination exercise, the Ministry says as of July 25,  2021, a total of 1,673,272 vaccines had been administered across the country. Of these, total first doses are 1,047,592 while second doses are 625,680.

“The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 59.7% with the majority being males at 55% while females are
at 45%. Proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.3%,” said the Ministry

“The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 194,987, Others 180,400, Health Workers 110,978 Teachers 89,611 while Security Officers are at 49,704.”
