Kenyas COVID-19 positivity rate at 9.4% after 480 new infections recorded

The Ministry of Health on Wednesday announced that 480 people tested positive for COVID-19 from a sample size of 5,120 tested in the last 24 hours.

The positivity rate is now 9.4%, with total confirmed infections rising to 190,183 and cumulative tests so far conducted are 2,028,927.

From the cases, 459 are Kenyans while 21 are foreigners; 245 are males and 235 females, while the youngest is a two-month-old infant and the oldest is 100 years.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, in a statement to newsrooms, said 148 patients recovered from the disease; 81 were discharged from various health facilities countrywide while 67 are from Home-Based Isolation and Care. Total recoveries stand at 180,080.

CS Kagwe however noted that 5 patients succumbed to the coronavirus, all of them being late deaths reported after conducting facility record audits in the months of October and November 2020 and June 2021. This pushes the cumulative fatalities to 3,737.

The new cases were distributed across various counties namely; Nairobi 178, Nakuru 54, Kiambu 40, Siaya 25, Uasin Gishu 25, Kisumu 20, Nandi 19, Kakamega 14, Trans Nzoia 12, Mombasa 11, Kilifi 10, Tharaka Nithi 8, Kajiado 6, Kericho 6, Migori 5, Embu 5, Nyandarua 5, Bungoma 4, Meru 4, Murang’a 4, Garissa 3, Kirinyaga 3, Machakos 3, Kwale 2, Nyeri 2, Taita Taveta 2, Tana River 2, Makueni 1, Narok 1, Baringo 1, Busia 1, Hama Bay 1, Bomet 1, Kitui 1 and Laikipia 1.

“A total of 1,075 patients are currently admitted in various health facilities countrywide, while 4,486 are under the Home Based Isolation and Care program. 121 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 37 of whom are on ventilatory support and 58 on supplemental oxygen,” stated the CS.

“26 patients are under observation. Another 216 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 200 of them in general wards and 16 in High Dependency Units (HDU).”

CS Kagwe also said a total of 1,565,344 vaccines have so far been administered across the country; of these, total first doses are 1,030,853 while second doses are 534,491.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 51.8% with the majority being males at 55% while females are at 45%. Proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.0%.

The uptake of the second dose by Priority Groups is as follows: Aged 58 years and above 165,200; Others 151,715; Health Workers 101,020; Teachers 74,206; and Security Officers are at 42,350.
