Kenyatta concludes Lamu visit with call for peace

By PSCU, Lamu

President Uhuru Kenyatta has concluded his two-day visit of Lamu with a rallying call for peace so that development can take root in the county.

The President’s visit saw 4073 residents receive title deeds and three hospitals receive Ksh 200 million for modernisation. Lamu Hospital got Ksh 100 million to upgrade it to level 5 status while Mpeketoni and Faza hospital each received Ksh 50 million for modernisation.

And before he completed the visit to the county on Friday, President Kenyatta commissioned a Ksh 46 million water project at Faza in Pate Island.

Speaking at Faza Secondary School after opening the Faza-Vumbe water project, the Head of State affirmed the national Government’s commitment to working closely with county governments to ensure Kenyans receive effective services.

The water project was funded by the Iranian Government in partnership with the national Government and the County Government of Lamu.

“I wish to commend the Governor and the County Government of Lamu for working closely with the national Government to serve the residents,” President Kenyatta said.

At Faza, President Kenyatta issued 2069 title deeds, which is part of the 4073 that were issued in Lamu County during the President’s visit.

On Thursday, he issued 2004 title deeds to landowners at Mkunumbi.

He also reassured Lamu residents that the Witu-Mokowe road, one of the key roads in the county, will be tarmacked.

“Construction of the Witu-Mokowe road will start in two months’ time and I will personally monitor its progress.”

President Kenyatta emphasised the need for unity and drummed up support for the Jubilee Party, saying it is a party that will bring together all Kenyans.

“We cannot not claim to stand for a united country and still support political parties formed on tribal lines.”

Noting that fishing is one of the main economic activities for the people of Lamu, President Kenyatta directed Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery to come up with a formula that will ensure fishermen are facilitated to carry out their activities without compromising security.

On combating drug and substance abuse, the President urged local leaders to spearhead the fight against the menace.

“My Government will give you all the support you need to stop this vice that is destroying our youths.”

Lamu Governor Issa Timamy thanked President Kenyatta for his steadfast support to development in Lamu County, citing the release of Ksh 200 million to upgrade the health sector in the county.

The President was accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Jacob Kaimenyi, Najib Balala and Eugene Wamalwa. Also present were Lamu Senator Abu Chiaba and Lamu East Member of Parliament Sharif Athman among other leaders.
