KNH denies second alleged surgery blunder

The Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) has denied media reports that a surgery conducted on Ms. Susan Nekesa caused her complications.

Doctors at the facility however apologised for not communicating to the patient what their treatment plan entails.

According to Dr. Gacheri Nyamu, KNH director of clinical services, the Caesarean section was not the cause of injuries on her internal organs and the public should refrain from premature conclusions.

He acknowledged that the institution sometimes faces a shortage of colostomy bags needed for bowel movement and when a patient cannot afford to bring their own, the hospital tries to get one from a different facility.

“We however apologise to the family members for not explaining what exactly happened. It is not this hospital’s policy to refuse to give patients their information,” he told journalists on Friday.

On the issue of one of the twins who died, the hospital said the infant died of natural causes and the father was informed of the same.

Ms. Eunice Keiza, assistant chief nurse at the Newborn Unit said: “The baby was fed at around midnight at the nursery but unfortunately died three hours later.”

The doctors said Ms. Nekesa is scheduled to go back to theater on Monday.
