Kenyatta University is not a military barrack, UASU told

In a statement sent to newsrooms, the university termed the accusations as malicious and crafted to taint the good reputation of the institution.

The university’s Vice Chancellor Professor Paul Wainaina further scolded the officials accusing them of planning to paralyse learning even after the court directed that lecturers resume duty.

Prof. Wainaina said the institution had requested for extra police security to counter alleged disruptions from a small band of UASU operatives who he said are bent on disrupting learning.

Although he admitted that some lecturers were dispersed using teargas at the institutions main gate, Wainaina denied claims that police used live bullets during the encounter with a section of UASU activists on Tuesday.

This was after the dispersed lecturers attempted to disrupt and attack lecturers who were teaching.

KU now says that it will not entertain any type of hooliganism on campus, adding that they respect the right of the union to picket, but the activity should be done in an orderly manner and within the law.

Wainaina further urged UASU officials to respect the students’ rights to learn, adding that learning was ongoing at the university.

The VC called on students still at home to report to their campuses to enable lecturers to complete their syllabus even as negotiations on the Collective Bargaining Agreement continue.
