Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot lauds KNEC board disbandment

Kericho County Senator Aaron Cheruiyot has lauded the move taken by Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i to disband the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) Board.

Speaking at Moi Tea Girls High School in Kericho, the Senator called for stringent measures to be taken against those who will be found guilty of exam malpractice in last year’s national examinations.

Cheruiyot added that the rampant cheating tainted the image and integrity of the Council, causing the public to lose confidence and trust in the exam body.

Meanwhile, Matiangi has turned the heat on the management of schools countrywide – including school principals and school boards. The CS said heads of institutions that are involved in cheating will be fired.

Two days ago, the government disbanded the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) board over last year’s national exams cheating scandal.

CS Matiang’i said that the disbandment of KNEC’s board was taken to restore the institution’s integrity.

“This decision was reached after a thorough review done by the Ministry of Education with assistance from the Interior Ministry. Parents and teachers should rest assured that the government cares for them,” said the Education CS.

The rampant cheating also attracted the attention of the Interior Ministry with CS Joseph Nkaissery saying that they were looking into the criminal aspects of the cheating scandal.

“We found a lot of discrepancies in KNEC; we are here to support the Education Ministry to reduce criminality in KNEC,” said the Interior CS.

Nine officials of the board including the CEO Dr Joseph Kivilu were ordered to record a statement explaining why action should not be taken against them.
