Keter gives Kenya Power two weeks to power all primary schools

Energy Cabinet Secretary Charles Keter has now given Kenya Power and the Rural Electrification Authority two weeks to complete powering of all Primary Schools in the country.

Speaking at Thange Primary School in Kibwezi, Makueni County, the Cabinet Secretary issued a stern warning to officials in his docket who fail to implement the Jubilee Government election promises saying that he will not relent from sending them home.

Keter, who was touring areas affected by oil spillage, further gave the Kenya Pipeline Company two weeks to file a report on the impact of an oil spill that took place last year in Thange area of Makueni County.

The energy CS also wants the Kenya Pipeline Company to avail him an audit report, within the next two weeks, on the section of the oil pipeline that is said to have suffered a leak.

In May last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta launched the last mile connectivity for all primary schools and announced an immediate reduction of the connection fee from Ksh 35,000 to Ksh 15,000 payable in installments to allow those who cannot pay at once.

He said a total of 5,320 transformers (40,000 by 2017) would be distributed all over the country to roll out the project and urged Kenyans to take advantage of the project for economic enhancement.

The President said the project, which is funded jointly by Japan International Cooperation Agency, World Bank, African Development Bank and Danish International Development Agency, was another clear indicator of the Government’s commitment to improve the living standards of all Kenyans, irrespective of their political inclination.

In his New Year message to Kenyans, President Uhuru Kenyatta further highlighted that the government had completed the final phase of connecting government primary schools to electricity.

“This has enabled us to lay a foundation for the delivery of our promise of modern, digital learning in primary schools.” Said Kenyatta

“For the first time in our nation’s history, we are also on target to connect one million households to the national grid in a single financial year, and remain on target to connect 70 per cent of Kenyan households to electricity by 2017.” added the President.
