KEWOPA chair Ngirici asks ODM to reconsider Aisha Jumwas expulsion

Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) Chairperson Wangui Ngirici has urged the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to reconsider its decision to expel Malindi MP Aisha Jumwa from the party.

Speaking to Citizen Digital on Thursday, Ngirici faulted the expulsion of Jumwa from the ODM over her alleged association with Deputy President William Ruto, saying it goes against the spirit of the handshake.

“The handshake between Opposition leader Raila Odinga and President Uhuru Kenyatta was supposed to usher in a new era of political collaboration and tolerance that would see leaders from different sides of the political divide work together for the sake of national unity,” she said.

“The collaboration between the Deputy President and Aisha Jumwa was aimed at ensuring development is realised in Malindi, and was a replication of the unity that oneness between witnessed at the national level as a result of the March 9 handshake between Raila and President Uhuru.”

She added that expelling Aisha Jumwa from ODM was prejudicial and an infringement to her right to association.

“I would like to believe that the re-conciliatory bridge built by Raila and President Uhuru wasn’t just meant to help Raila crossover to Canaan alone, but to ensure all his members crossed over as well, Aisha Jumwa included,” she said.

Other KEWOPA members including Kandara MP Alice Wahome and Isiolo Woman Representative Rehema Jaldesa have also defended Jumwa in the matter terming ODM’s move as an overreach, claims that have been openly disputed by Homa Bay Women Representative Gladys Wanga.

On Monday, the Political Parties Dispute Tribunal (PPDT) granted Jumwa a temporary reprieve suspending her expulsion pending the hearing of the case slated for March 8, 2019.
