Khalwale proposes new power sharing formula for CORD leaders

Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale has proposed a new formula that will ensure the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) stays united ahead of the next election.

Khalwale proposed that the coalition should adopt a 40-30-30 formula between ODM leader Raila Odinga, Ford Kenya’s Moses Wetangula and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, to ensure amicable distribution of appointive positions within the coalition.

“Every party within the coalition should consult within their National Executive Councils and come up with a workable formula that will be used in picking the presidential candidate,” said the Kakamega Senator.

“The principal who will be picked as the coalition’s flag bearer will have 40 per cent of the appointive positions as well as Majority Leader positions in the National Assembly and the Senate.”

“The other two coalition partners will get 30 per cent each with one of them being the running mate and the other picked to run for Nairobi Governorship seat.”

“There is need to come up with a formula that will bring to an end the push for supremacy in CORD. This will help the principals in CORD to operate from an informed point of view,” said Khalwale.

The Senator, who recently defected from the defunct UDF to Ford Kenya, further called for an agreement ahead of the elections to avert disagreements.

He also noted that he plays a significant role in ensuring unity in CORD by maintaining Ford Kenya’s presence in the coalition.

Khalwale’s sentiments come amid growing discontent in the coalition, with its three principals announcing their interest in running for president in the 2017 elections.

Ford Kenya leader Moses Wetangula, in his recent remarks stated that he will not drop his presidential ambitions for anyone in the coalition.

Wetangula called on the Luhya community to rally behind him saying he is better placed to unseat President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka has also reiterated his determination to run for president calling for ODM’s Raila Odinga to support his ambitions in line with a 2013 Memorandum of Understanding between Wiper and ODM.

ODM party members have however come out to refute claims of Raila Odinga dropping his presidential ambitions saying he commands a political clout that gives him a better shot at becoming president.

Meanwhile, ODM and Wiper have warned Ford Kenya legislators against misinforming the public on the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2013.

Speaking on Tuesday, Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama and Siaya Senator James Orengo said the agreement was between Wiper and ODM adding that Ford Kenya is part of a pre-election agreement filed at the Registrar of Political Parties office.

The leaders downplayed reports of cracks in the coalition saying CORD is united more than ever.
