KHRC claims de-registration ill-intended

Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has condemned the decision by NGO Coordination Board to de-register the civil society group, saying the move is ill intended.

Commission Executive Director, George Kegoro, and Chairperson Maina Kiai say the alleged decision to de-register the organization is based on unsubstantiated allegations.

“This is another attempt to harass and intimidate the commission by the NGO coordination board and more specifically by Fazul Mohammed,” Mr. Kiai said.

Kegoro and Kiai have also defended the NGO against accusations by NGO Board boss, Fazul Mohamed, of failing to account for donor funding and vow to challenge the decision in court.

“KHRC has been accused by the NGO Coordination Board of operating illegal accounts and failing to abide by statutory tax obligations, KHRC has not violated the law and this is a travesty of justice by the board,” Mr. Kiai said.

They further deny claims that KHRC has employed expatriates without following due procedure, accusing Fazul of taking the action without giving them a chance to defend themselves against the claims.

The body says it will release report on the just concluded General Election tomorrow (August 16) whose results have been rejected by the National Super Alliance (NASA) saying the move by the NGO coordination board comes in the wake of the commission’s plan to file a petition challenging presidential results.
