KIAMBU: Police arrest changaa drinkers

The suspects were arrested on Wednesday night from chang'aa dens at Witei-thie and Mirima-ini wards.

The operation led by Juja sub-county administrator Nathaniel Okenyi, saw police ambushing some of the notorious drinking dens where patrons fled to avoid being arrested.

Mr Okenyi: "We will extend the operation to other estates to put an end to the vice."

On Friday, 13 February, police reportedly swooped in on chang’aa dens in Witei-thie estate and beat up a woman who had given birth after her husband escaped.

ALCOHOLISM

About 40 suspects were arrested in the raid following Governor William Kabogo’s directive that no more licenses for liquor outlets be issued in a bid to reduce the number of pubs.

The suspects will be arraigned, at Thika County Court.

Illicit brew has led to death and destruction in Kiambu County due to alcoholism.

In November 2014, three people including a husband, his wife and another man were found dead after consuming illicit brew in Nginduri Kiambu County.

Illicit brew can cause blindness and it also leads to divorce.
