Kiambu sets up 13 rehabs for alcoholics

There has been a country wide withdrawal and elimination of illicit brew which has subsequently left dependent users of alcohol vulnerable to acute withdrawal syndrome.

In Kiambu County, the county government has recognized the risk of occurrence of acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome and has initiated a number of short to medium term measures to counter this medical emergency and provide rehabilitation and counselling services.

These services are available at the 13 centres in all level 4 and 5 health facilities in the county, and can be accessed at any time.

The county has acquired the necessary emergency medication and organized for all the health care providers to be able to respond to the problem of acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome and closely working with the department of youth and sports to identify the affected youths.

In addition, the county will provide follow up rehabilitation and counselling services for all persons recovering from alcohol dependence in these facilities.

The operation against illicit liquor and second generation alcohol began on Thursday, a day after President Uhuru Kenyatta met legislators from Central Kenya at State House in Nairobi.

In his pronouncement during the meeting, President Kenyatta banned the sale of second generation liquor and ordered an immediate crackdown to tame the sale of illicit brew in the region.

The announcement was followed by interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery’s ban on second generation brews in the country in what sparked a massive crackdown countrywide.

The crackdown has left many alcoholics suffering from withdrawal symptoms and others still trying to access the banned products.

Revellers at drinking joints have petitioned the President to compel the Kenya Breweries Limited and other brewers to reduce alcohol prices for low income earners to afford their brands.

The revellers say they will only stop partaking in illicit brew when the prices of popular alcoholic beverages are reduced.

They have at the same time blamed local administration for not acting on the information they receive from members of the public and instead collude with brewers and sellers of illicit alcohol.
