Charles Kibiru bows out of Senate Deputy Speaker race, hints at Kamar win

Kirinyaga Senator Charles Kibiru who had emerged as the frontrunner in the race to fill the Senate Deputy Speaker position has pulled out of the race.

According to Kibiru, it would be ‘derelict’ of him not to view his would-be victory as merely ‘pyrrhic’.

“I have unreservedly withdrawn my candidature for the Senate Deputy Speaker position,” he said in a statement on Monday.

Kibiru further hinted towards a win for Senator Margaret Kamar saying he will not seek election for that office anymore in the interest of promoting gender equity.

The Kirinyaga Senator further averred that the ongoing remake of Kenyan politics calls for sacrifices, some of which must be personal by nature.

Five Senators were cleared to run for the  seat in the poll that is set for Tuesday: Kibiru, Kamar, Stewart Madzayo, Isaac Mwaura and Judy Pareno.

To clinch the deputy speaker’s slot in the first round, a contestant must garner at least two thirds of the votes, that is, 45 out of 67 votes.

If there will be no outright winner in the first round of voting, the top two contestants will square it out in the second round of voting, with the winner requiring a simple majority vote.

Prof. Kithure Kindiki was pushed out from the position over allegations of insubordination.

Kindiki is among Jubilee Senators allied to Deputy President William Ruto who have been de-whipped by the party after failing to attend a parliamentary group meeting at State House.
