Kidero sets aside Ksh 2M for victims of Huruma building tragedy

Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero has promised to give Ksh 2 million to victims of the collapsed building in Huruma Estate.

Speaking on Sunday when he visited the site, Kidero said the amount would be used to cater for burial arrangements and logistics.

The Governor further appealed to Nairobi residents to vacate houses that have been constructed in flood-prone areas and relocate to safer ground to avoid the recurrence of such tragedies.

He noted that he would take action against county officials who are in charge of approving construction work, blaming corruption for the troubles bedeviling Nairobi County.

The death toll from the tragedy, which occurred on Friday evening, has risen to 16 with 135 people having been rescued so far.

Tens of families that were living in condemned buildings in Huruma have resorted to move out over safety concerns.

The families were seen on Sunday moving out of their houses with their belongings as rains continue to cause havoc in parts of Nairobi.

Already, Insepctor General Joseph Boinnet has ordered for the arrest of the building’s owner and contractor for flouting construction regulations.

Kidero’s pronouncement comes as it emerges that over 258 buildings in Nairobi have been declared unsafe for occupation, according to Lands Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi.

Meanwhile, Nairobi Senator Mike ‘Mbuvi’ Sonko has condoled with families of those who lost their lives in the Huruma building tragedy accusing governor Kidero of laxity in taming rogue contractors in the city.

Speaking in Kisii on Sunday, Sonko said that Kidero had failed to order the demolition of the condemned buildings blaming corruption in the county government for the latest tragedies in the city.
