Kidero to allow EACC to scrutinize his bank accounts for a specific period

Nairobi Governor Dr. Evans Kidero now says he will only allow the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) to access his bank accounts if the commission specifies the period for which it wants to scrutinize them.

Kidero says he has had the bank accounts since 1983 and wants the EACC headed by Philip Kinisu to indicate the specific period and he will cooperate and allow the accounts to be scrutinized.

This comes barely a fortnight after the High Court extended orders barring EACC from probing accounts belonging to him and his wife Susan Mboya, after issuing the initial order on March 1st.

Justice Joseph Onguto issued the orders after Kidero and Susan claimed EACC detectives had tricked a magistrate into issuing a warrant for the probe on allegations of economic crimes linked to his tenure at Mumias Sugar Company, with the matter set to be heard on June 20th.

EACC wanted a case filed by Governor Kidero and his wife seeking to stop investigations into their bank accounts dismissed.

The EACC  said that they received several allegations of corruption and unethical conduct against the Governor and intelligence reports that Kidero regularly received millions of shillings in bribes from sugar traders and dealers while serving as the Managing Director of Mumias Sugar Company LTD.

According to the Anti-graft body, preliminary investigations revealed that Kidero received tens of millions of shillings into his several bank accounts held in different currencies and had acquired several assets.

Since 2015, Kidero has fought to stop the EACC from accessing information on his personal bank transactions and those of his wife.

A number of corruption accusations have been made against Kidero with the latest being that he paid Supreme Court Judge Philip Tunoi Sh200 million to secure a favourable verdict in an election petition.
