Kieni MP Kega accuses Nyeri Governor of frustrating county budget

Kieni Member of Parliament, Kanini Kega, has accused Nyeri Governor Nderitu Gachagua of frustrating the county budget due to personal interests.

Speaking in Kieni on Saturday, Kega said that the governor’s claims that he is behind the chaos that have been rocking the county assembly in recent days are unfounded saying the woes facing the county boss are self-inflicted.

“The governor was heard in a local vernacular station blaming me for the woes that are facing the county government. His claims that I have been bribing MCAs to disrupt business in the County Assembly are baseless. I wish I had that kind of money, as he claims,” said Kega.

He pointed out that the governor has refused to assent to Ksh 6.4 billion county budget because his interests have not been included.

“The governor has refused to assent to the bill because it does not cater for his foreign travels and a budget for new cars,” he said.

“As much as I am opposed to the violence that have been witnessed in the assembly in recent past, I want the governor to focus on providing services to the people of Nyeri and moreso Kieni Constituency which I represent.”

He said that political differences between the governor and MCAs may lead to underdevelopment saying he has personally intervened to help resolve the issues.

“No one wants to see violence in Nyeri County Assembly between the governor and MCAs because that will only work to stunt development in the county,” said Kega.

“I have held talks with the MCA and we have agreed to end violence in the assembly as we seek a solution to the impasse.”

The legislator called on the governor to assent to the budget and focus his energy on serving the people of Nyeri.

“He (Nderitu) was elected to work and yet he has not done anything in the four years he has been in power. We are not merely talking now, we are demanding for development.”

The county assembly has seen face offs between county assembly members affiliated to the governor and those opposed to his leadership with efforts to impeach him failing to materialise.

The governor has attributed his woes to his political rivals saying he has embarked on his reelection plan.

Speaking during a leaders meeting in Mathira, Nyeri County on Friday, the county boss said he was ready to face the ward representatives in court if his impeachment motion sail through.
