Kilifi set to legalize Mnazi drink

The County Government of Kilifi is set to legalize the production and consumption of the traditional coconut brew commonly known as “Mnazi”.

This is after the County Assembly unanimously passed the Coconut Bill 2014 that seeks to promote and regulate the production of coconut tree and its by products and trade.

The Bill that was sponsored by Mariakani MCA Saidi Mwachenda is now waiting to be assented to by the Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi.

The Kilifi County government will now promote the production of the coconut tree by training farmers and distributing certified seedlings.

The law will require a farmer a permit before planting and every production and business will be regulated as the county government eyes on collecting more revenue from the sector.

Brew traders will be required to have proper licenses to enable them engage in the business.

Other laws and timelines in the country stipulated for the consumption of alcohol will also apply on the consumption of mnazi.

The County assembly speaker Jimmy Kahindi said that they will take the Bill to law enforcers for sensitization and warned Kilifi residents that they are allowed to take the liquor on the stipulated time.

The Bill was passed as the fight against illicit brew intensified in the country.

The Kilifi County assembly members during the debate maintained that mnazi is not an illicit brew noting that it had been targeted in the crackdown.
