Killer gangs attack boda boda operators using guns, acid in Kwale

Boda boda operators in Diani and Kinondo in Kwale County have protested the numerous attacks by unknown people which have left five riders dead in a span of three months.

It is alleged that the killer gang normally strike at night killing the operators and fleeing with their motorcycles.

According to Diani Assistant County Commissioner Penina Mwaka, the attackers use guns and acid to kill the cyclists.

“The gangs kill by shooting or pouring acid to boda boda operators and then run away with the bikes,” she said.

The Chairman of boda boda operators in the area, Hassan Mwatenga, on his part accused police officers of doing little in apprehending the culprits.

“The police always say that they are investigating but nothing comes forth, as we talk now no single bike has been recovered,” he stated.

However, the Assistant Commissioner clarified that the problem was as a result of a communication break-down between the police and the operators.

“When these cases happen they are never reported on time, so we are sensitizing them so that they can be giving us information on time and we act swiftly,” she noted.

She further added that there would be increased surveillance to curb the menace in the area.

“We want to come up with strategies restored in partnership with the mwananchi and ensure that peace and security have been restored and no more killings will happen.”

The most affected areas are Congo, Kibundani, Mabokoni and Darad.
