Kingi freezes assets of companies mentioned in Kilifi scam

Kilifi County Governor Amason Kingi has moved to court to bar companies implicated in the loss of Ksh51 million from county coffers from accessing cash in their bank accounts or making transactions on their properties.

According to Kingi, the court accepted their plea and issued temporary orders freezing the companies’ accounts and property until the case is heard on Thursday, December 1.

Kingi said that they took the initiative to go to court to ensure that the mentioned companies will reimburse public funds if found culpable of corruption.

“Because we realised that cases do take a long time (to be concluded), we asked the court to give us orders against the companies,” said the governor.

This comes as Governor Kingi is expected to appear before the Ethics and anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Monday to shed light on the disappearance of county funds.

Kingi, however, refuted claims that he has been summoned to appear before the anti-corruption commission as a witness, insisting that he voluntarily chose to appear as a complainant.

“It is the county government that went to EACC to file a complaint, not the other way as many people want Kenyans to believe. I am the one who walked into EACC and told them there is this matter, kindly move in and investigate,” Kingi said while addressing journalists in Mombasa.

The governor expressed his willingness to step aside if “fighting corruption is a crime”.

He dismissed claims made by the National Assembly Majority Leader Aden Duale regarding the disappearance of funds saying that Duale doesn’t have facts and is just acting on rumours.

CORD Leader Raila Odinga recently came out strongly in defence of the Kilifi governor, who is a member of his ODM party, against corruption allegations.

According to Odinga, Governor Kingi reported corruption in his county based on suspicious audit queries and therefore should not be labelled corrupt until investigations are finalised.

Raila has since come under fierce criticism over the remarks, with Jubilee politicians accusing him of being against the fight against corruption.

The Jubilee Government is currently struggling to clear its name over corruption scandals in NYS and Ministry of Health.
