Kirinyaga boy with unknown skin disease gets help after social media campaign

A Kirinyaga boy who was suffering from an unknown skin disease for three years is to be taken to Nairobi for treatment after a social media campaign highlighted his plight.

A chilling video of George Githae scratching himself and crying in pain began trending online this week.

This prompted county officials to look for the three-year-old who was found in Kiratina village where he lives with the mother Susan Wangu Ngige.

“We have received the patient and he is currently stable. We have managed to treat patients with a similar condition before,” Dr. Lydia Muoki from Kerugoya District Hospital said.

County CEC for Health Agnes Gachoki also indicated that she has consulted doctors from Kenyatta National Hospital and they suspect that the boy could be suffering from atopic dermatitis (eczema) which is curable.

The boy’s mother said he developed the condition six months after birth.

“When his condition flared up I could no longer go to work because he is in too much pain,” she said.
