Kisii University students move to court to bar closure

The High Court in Kisumu has certified as urgent a case filed by Kisii University students, Kisumu branch, who are challenging the closure of the satellite campus.

In her ruling, however, Lady Justice Tripsisa Cherere declined to grant stay orders to stop the process of shutting down the campus.

She further directed the students, through their lawyer Ken Amondi, to serve the institution’s management for a hearing slated for Tuesday next week.

The move comes after the institution, which has a population of about 1600 students, was shut down on Thursday last week.

In a notice signed by the Director of Kisii Univerity, Kisumu Campus, Dr. Stephen Oluoch, the students were directed to make plans and join other campuses like Migori, Kisii, Nairobi, Kericho and Eldoret.

The students, through their lawyer Amondi told the court that the circumstances in which the campus was shut down were unclear adding that such abrupt closure would lead to huge losses to the students and by extension the staff.
