Kisumu activist on hunger strike over Miguna saga

Kisumu-based human rights activist Boniface Ogutu Akach has entered the fourth day of his hunger strike to protest against the detention and deportation of Miguna Miguna.

Akach has said he will continue to keep vigil without food at the Kondele roundabout until President Uhuru Kenyatta takes action. Miguna, who is in Canada, has since acknowledged the move.

“I was glad to hear that Miguna was receiving much-needed medical attention in Canada. However, my being here is not only about his issue alone. What pains me is the fact that there are some individuals in this country who have decided that they will not respect court decisions or the Constitution we fought for with blood and tears,” he told Radio Ramogi on Tuesday.

Miguna took to Twitter to applaud Akach for the protest and thank him for “showing total commitment to the struggle.”

“However, I urge him and others not to die. Instead, we must organise, mobilise and remove the despots from their illegitimate positions of power,” Miguna’s tweet reads.

He further chastised the State for not following the law in regards to his deportation: “When the National Government can’t respect the rule of law, nothing will motivate the community down here to respect it as well. Actually that’s my greatest fear. When wananchi will take the law into their hands, we will turn Kenya into a banana republic.”
